As the recipient of Hendrix College’s Walker Odyssey Fellowship, I am excited to travel to India to study how yoga therapy can treat physical conditions as a complementary medicine. I am a recent graduate and a longtime practitioner of yoga who enjoys the physical and mental benefits of a daily practice. As someone who has no serious medical conditions, I have enjoyed practicing yoga for the calmness and balance a daily practice brings to my life.
This project is inspired by my mom, a breast cancer survivor, who began to practice yoga while undergoing chemotherapy. I want to understand how yoga therapy can be incorporated into western medical treatments to improve quality of life for patients suffering from various physical and mental illnesses. I am hopeful that yoga will continue to emerge in this cross-section between lifestyle and medicine with the promise to heal.
